On the way to Florida

We left home on Thursday, February 1st to drive to Lakepoint Resort State Park in Eufaula, AL to spend one night on the way to Blythe Island Regional Park in Brunswick, GA.  LRSP was quite nice but a bit messed up regarding registering for camping.  But once we got that figured out, we found our campsite then walked around the campground a bit.  We were assigned a campsite on the lake but the lake campsites were not very level so we selected one that was reasonably level.

There was only one other camper in the campground so it was very quiet.

Friday, February 2

We left LRSP Friday morning and took our time getting to Blythe Island on Friday afternoon.  Something that caught our attention was the number of domesticated rabbits running around all over the place.

Saturday, February 3

On Saturday, we drove to Fort Frederica, a National Monument in the National Park system.

In the early 18th century, the land lying between British South Carolina and Spanish Florida was known as the debatable land. This land (today's Georgia) was the epicenter of a centuries-old imperial conflict between Spain and Britain.
Fort Frederica was established in 1736 by James Oglethorpe to protect the southern boundary of his new colony of Georgia from the Spanish in Florida. Colonists from England, Scotland, and the Germanic states came to Georgia to support this endeavor.

We also visited historic Brunswick, GA, which is claimed to be the origination of Brunswick stew July 2, 1898. (some also claim Brunswick, VA is the origination of the stew)

Sunday, February 4

Today was a cloudy day, but we woke up to 60 degree temps so we went for a couple of walks before the rain started after lunch.  We are about 30 miles from the Florida border and less than two hours from our next stop, Anastasia State Park near St. Augustine, FL.
